Kira-Kira

The 2005 Newbery Award winner by Cynthia Kadohata, follows the Takeshima family from Iowa to Georgia in the 1950's. The funny and poignant story shows the working conditions in a non-unionized poultry plant and the racial prejudice the Japanese-American family experiences.Kira-Kira is the Japanese word for glittering, and the character Katie uses it frequently. When her older sister, Lynn, becomes ill, Katie tries to find ways to ease her sister's pain. Often sad, but also inspirational, this well-written novel will touch hearts.-Xochiquetzal

Gilda Joyce and the Ladies of the Lake

Gilda Joyce and the Ladies of the Lake by Jennifer Allison is a mystery with ghostly overtones. Gilda, the "psychic investigator", finds out that the new school she is attending may be haunted by the ghost of a student who drowned some years before. Told from the perspective of the main character, you will laugh at Gilda's feisty and humorous take on life. Although merely a teenager, she is often more "adult" than the grown-ups around her.-Xochiquetzal
