Moon Over Manifest

In honor of this week's Youth Media Awards, I am writing about last year's Newbury Medal winner, Moon Over Manifest, by Clare Vanderpool.  A historical mystery that jumps back and forth between 1918 and 1936, this is a complex story for sophisticated readers.  It takes place in Manifest, Kansas where Abilene has been sent by her father to live.  This small town is her father's former home, and Abilene slowly discovers his past and some town secrets, through a cigar box hidden in the floorboards of the old church/saloon where she lives.
